Adaptive yoga strengthens the connection between the mind and the body. Benefits would include increased flexibility, greater sense of balance, increased strength, mental clarity, and overall well-being.
This adaptive class focuses on individuals living with mobility disabilities, such as partial or total paralysis, amputation, severe spinal cord injury, severe arthritis, muscular dystrophy, multiple sclerosis, head injury, spina bifida and cerebral palsy.
In addition to her 12 years of yoga studies, Alisha has received an Adaptive Yoga teacher training certification from Matthew Sanford. She expects to continue to learn and share his teachings with students in the disabled community. For more information visit mindbodysolutions.org and watch these inspiring interviews by fellow students/teachers Samantha Drost and Kevin Bjorklund.
Individual instruction is also a great way to learn the practice of yoga. This session can include family members and/or caregivers. Individual sessions are beneficial as a complement to group class or if participation in group classes is not possible. These sessions allow the teacher to customize instructions and poses to specific conditions and are helpful for developing a home practice.
